I Am Legend

Genre : Action / Horror / Sci-Fi
Plot : A scientist struggles to find the cure for a deadly plague that befalls New York City.

At first, the movie poster and the tag line gave me the impression that this should be a movie like Robinson Crusoe and for those people who doesn’t know who the hell is Robinson Crusoe, he is that dumb bloke who got stuck on an island and nobody could find him so he just spent his whole life foraging whatever that is left on that island to survive with hopes one day he will be rescued. Although this movie started looking like that because all you can see is how he hunts antelopes using a sniper rifle while riding a Ford Mustang and of course how he bathes his dog, Sam. Not to left out, him eating breakfast only surprisingly. There was not even one scene showing him eating lunch or dinner. He treats Sam like his own daughter, literally. Talks and treats mannequins like real human beings.

Dr. Robert Neville, a scientist who was the last man standing because he was somehow immune to the widespread of the zombie virus that turns the living to half undead “Dark Seekers“which fears the sunlight (UV rays) hence most of the screen time are on day light meaning no irritating and frustrating night scenes that you can’t even see shi- The movie reaches its climax when Neville accidentally wandered into one of the Dark Seekers’ nest in search for Sam and was attacked, Neville decided to capture one of them to become one of this test subject for his research. Unfortunately, he caught the Dark Seekers’ commander’s girlfriend. The commander subsequently sets up the same trap which not only Neville fell for it and got his thigh stabbed with the pen knife he was using to cut himself free, he lost Sam, his only canine companion. That scene was perhaps the most touching scene throughout the entire movie, i would have teared.

Neville seeks revenge by driving his SUV and ran down as much Dark Seekers as possible on the same night itself. My assumption was that he didn’t planned to go on living anymore because he has lost his one and only companion but so happens at the verge of his death, someone came to his rescue. Someone, alive. The story then goes back to be boring again. I am disappointed with the ending because it is too simple and swift, cramming everything into the last 10 minutes or so. The ultimate let down.

I have always like Will Smith and he successfully projected a person who is very desperate for human interaction. This movie has a twist of Resident Evil because it involves zombies and of course very much less obscene. It has a more genuine storyline that one can appreciate rather just seeing blood spewing out from every creatures’ neck when the heroine sliced it in half. This movie was also based on a novel but it has many elements changed including how Neville got Sam.

Novel : Sam was a wild dog Neville found uninfected wandering around the town and succeeded in domesticating it. It died one week later due to the infection through physical wounds.
Movie : Sam was a German Shepard owned by Marley, Neville’s deceased daughter and was given to him as a puppy with the intention to keep him company.

I would give this movie a 5/5 but because of the swift and hasty ending, it somehow destroys the whole movie but i enjoy watching this movie nonetheless. Great Movie!

4.5/5
