Fuel Consumption Rating Post-RON 95
I’m sure now Malaysians are VERY familiar with the term “RON” which previously most of us are ignorant towards. For those of you are still in the darkside =O let me enlighten you a bit, basically “RON” is the terminology used to classified the quality of fuel that we are pumping into our cars every single day. The higher the number, the better the quality. The fuel that we are pumping into our cars are RON97, which is the highest there is in this country. RON92 are available are not widely used. A short briefing about what has happened.
- Government claimed that they can no longer subsidize RON97 and maintain the price at RM1.80, an increase is necessary.
- Government implemented a RM0.25 cents rise, making RON97 costs RM2.05 per litre, the highest price ever achieved for fuel per litre.
NOTE : This rate is even higher than when the world is experiencing so-called “world shortage” of fuel supply.
- Government brought in RON95 to have RON92 replaced and claimed RON95 is going to be priced at RM1.70. Lower than the previous RON97 but a tad more expensive than RON92.
- RON95 was supplied to major petrol kiosks with the agreed price, RM1.70 per litre.
- A day after, Government released an official statement stating that they cannot retained RM1.70 per litre, RM0.05cents increase was implemented.
- The next day,the Government implemented the RM0.05 cents increase, they then released another statement with the same excuse.
- Another RM0.05 cents increase in price was implemented putting RON95 at the same price as RM97 before the RM0.25 cents increase.
So, was the Government lying to us?
Is this the Government’s trick to prevent us from congestingĀ petrol kiosks nationwide to pump RON97 before theĀ RM0.25 cents kicks in so that petrol kiosks operators will not withhold selling fuels that night so that they can earn more by selling old fuel in their silos with the new inflated price?
Was the statement RON 95 will be selling RM0.10 cents cheaper than RON97 a lie?
Of course the Government was not lying to us, they are all acting in utmost good faith. They told the press clean and clear that the world price of fuel sky rocketed and that the sudden RM0.10 cent increase on the price of RON 95 was unforseeable even when they have a whole bunch of specialized speculators sitting in the office doing only just that. This was all just a coincidence, the Government was not at fault when announcing that RON95 will be priced at RM1.70 and subsequently pumped up to RM1.80 in less than week. It’s a free market out there, prices fluctuates and quoting all the ministers here in Malaysia when questioned about fuel prices
even with the price increase, we, Malaysia still has the lowest fuel prices here in Asia, that is an undeniable fact.
True that, only that they forgot that those Asia countries we are comparing with are not producers =O
Anyway, old news. There’s nothing i can do about it.
I’m sure everyone is interested to know that how would this RON95 affects the performance of your car and also what about the fuel economy now that the fuel is of lower grade. I drive a Proton Gen.2 1.3 litre and here are my results for 2 main fuel suppliers here in Malaysia.
Petronas Primax 3
(based on RM10.00 @ 5.55 litres)
I got 45 kilometres from RM5.55 litres and so that means :
RM10.00 = 43KM
RM1.00 = 4.3KM
RM0.23 = 1.0KM
With the above calculations, i would be required to burn 0.15litres for every 1 kilometres my car travels.
Shell
(based on RM67.03 @ 37.24 litres)
RM67.03 = 389 KM
RM1.00 = 5.8 KM
RM0.179 = 1.0 KM
With the above calculations, i would be required to burn 0.1litres for every 1 kilometres my car travels.
So as you can see that it is indeed that Shell did more justice in terms of fuel economy to my car compared to Petronas, a total of RM0.04 cents savings per kilometre.
But then again, these are all estimations but i believed that it is more or less rather accurate. I will do a recount of how much i can get from Petronas just to double confirm.
