My First Professional Camera

Yes, i finally bought the Canon S5-IS camera which i said that i’ll most probably not be getting it considering my parents reaction towards my request but then i decided to take matters into my own hands after my girlfriend persuaded me to do so because she knows i really wanted that camera really badly. I realized that i still have a brother that might lend a hand and besides, it’s not like i’m not going to pay back the money. I just needed someone to spread up my monthly expenditure so that i don’t need to think about suiciding at the end of the day and so i asked my brother can i use his credit card and forwarded my offer that i offered to my mom and he said “it can be arranged” and let him know when i want to buy it. I told him let’s go get it on Sunday to which he said ok.

Come Sunday, my brother asked me to meet him at the Jusco at 1200hrs and so me and my girlfriend went there and we were there early so we walked about while waiting for my brother’s arrival. When we were walking half way, my brother called me and asked me where am i and so i told him to meet me at the centre court where the fair was held and he said there’s no such thing as centre court here and then he asked me to point to him which is the nearest outlet so that it’s easier for us to make a meeting point. After tonnes of meeting points exchanged, we came to realized one thing. He was in the Jusco of Bukit Tinggi and not Bukit Raja -.- then of course i got a little bit of scolding from him for not making clear to him which Jusco i am talking about and then he said he wouldn’t be able to come and meet instantly as it takes roughly 20 minutes to travel here and he has an appointment to attend to and so having some of my mood destroyed and i told him there’s no need for him to come anymore because i don’t think i want the camera anymore for the very fact that the camera uses 4AA batteries instead of those rechargeable lithium battery packs which comes as a standard in today’s digital cameras and ever since i bought my N80, battery has always been a very big issue for me.

My girlfriend and i then left Bukit Raja and then head for Jusco Bukit Tinggi because we planned to catch Zohan hoping we could make it for the 1530hrs but when we arrived there, it was all too late. Only the 1800hrs slot is available and i have to fetch my girlfriend back the same night so we decided to screw movie and make it another day. Again, my girlfriend try to persuade me to get the camera or else i will regret and when she went into the toilet i did some careful consideration and came to a final conclusion which is too get it because come to think of it, it is a pretty good deal. I’ve check with several reliable sources and found out that for the price of RM1299.00 you get :-

  • S5-IS (of course) + with a built-in flash
  • 2GB Memory Card + 32MB Memory Card (basically useless)
  • A leather camera bag + one mini leather battery holder
  • The general stuffs like AV cables, neck strap and manual books etc.

Considering before the fair, the initial price of the camera is RM1699.00 without anything, just the camera itself. I scouted around photomalaysia.com and found a thread which was selling the exact same camera which is 3 months old at the price of RM1399.00 with 32MB memory card and now i’ll be able to get a new unused camera with 2GB memory card for RM100.00 less. Furthermore, i’ve check the features and made some comparisons myself after reading several reviews online, the S5 is definitely a camera that anyone would want to buy if they are planning to get into serious photography because it has a mixture of both a simple digital camera and an ALL manual mode just like how a dSLR acts and in the event if i screwed up, i still can use it as a normal digital camera with amazing zooming capabilities. One more plus point is that this camera can doubles up as a digital video recorder, just like your conventional digital camera and can record up to 4GB worth of videos and while recording you can just press the shutter button and snap pictures without having to stop the recording, neat eh?

Of course having purchased one of your most dream about items, you’ll definitely want to go ahead and use it and my girlfriend suggested to me to stay over at her house because my dad told me it will be late if i fetch her back and come back home. I stayed over. As you all know, my parents don’t know yet that i bought the camera and so i hid the boxes well and brought the camera along with me. Just when i thought everything is very well covered up, my brother texted me that night and told me that my mom found out that i bought the camera already and was angry at my brother for helping me committing this “crime”. I was furious because i know that my mom was ransacking and going through the things in my room and no one deserves to have their privacy infringed like this especially on things that you very obviously wanted to keep it a secret. Initially i was feeling a bit guilty for keeping the purchase a secret but after what has happened, i felt that i am more entitled to this purchase. Anyway, it all didn’t matter anymore because my mom asked me earlier today and i told her i bought it. She asked me where the hell did i get the money and i told her i saved them up which is the truth and she was amazed by it. Why don’t people believed that i can SAVE money, what the hell >=(

I took this picture off my girlfriend’s house balcony. This is on the Auto mode where everything is being tweaked according to the default settings and i’ve yet to try the Manual mode which i can fully change the settings of everything including the ISO, Aperture and most of the things that a dSLR can =D

I don’t know but to me, for a 8MP digital camera this is actually quite good quality picture taking. I don’t know whether the resolution or quality of the picture has been affected due to the fact i reduced the size of the picture tremendously using photoshop because i’m afraid that it might take too long a time to load the picture, especially if you’re on a 56K.

Zoooooom~

When i was saying that this camera has an amazing zooming capabilities, i’m not joking. For a digital camera, i personally find this extend of the zoom amusing. As you can see that how far the highway is from the place where i stand from the above picture. Oh yeah, if you don’t already know.. all these pictures can be click and you’ll get the original size of it. I shrink down the size just to have it fit in this blog dimension. It’s up to 12x the zoom according to the manual book and so i tried to see what i can do with it

I zoomed in max on the opposite neighbour’s house and i can clearly see what movie was on and if i’m not mistaken, it’s the olympic event of weight lifting XD. Another feature of this camera that appeals to me is the Super Marco mode which allows you to focus on objects at an almost impossible range of 0cm from the subject, don’t know what i mean?

When activated, you can take close up pictures like this…

…and this =DDDD (and no, i’m not a big fan of Kuomintang so the red star doesn’t mean anything) I live in Malaysia therefore i cherish democracy!! *coughhypocritecough*

China Made Crystal Ball

…and this too ^^, this is taken approximately at 0cm away and it is my Chinese Zodiac animal heh. However, although with the Auto Mode i can already practically take very good and nice pictures but my purpose of getting a semi-pro dSLR camera is not this so i’ll be reading the instruction manuals that are provided to me and see what can this camera do more and i’ve personally seen people messing with the settings and to my amazement, it has no difference with a full grown dSLR.

Night Shot

Night Shot

There’s one bad review about this camera is that when taking pictures at low lighting conditions, noise are fairly visible and often not desirable but i guess that only applies to the Auto Mode and so i tried to see if what they say in the reviews are true and yes, they are but after i mess with the ISO and did a little of bit of touching here and there and i snapped a night picture and as you can see, the noise aren’t really that disturbing but i have to say, all of these pictures taken on the first day is far from perfect.

Right now, the things that i need for my cause to get all “professional” is a good long lasting 4 AA rechargeable batteries and 1 UV Filter to protect the lens from any unwanted scratches T____T. Can’t really wait for my next road trip and fully exploit this camera.

Thanks for the info on the Canon S5. I am looking at Digital SLR cameras, but do you think the higher price is really worth the improved picture? How does the Canon S5 compare to SLRs? This site http://www.dslrcamerareviews.com was OK, but looking for more input/advice. Thoughts? thanks

To be honest with you, so far i’m pretty quite satisfied with what i’ve gotten with my S5 and of course i’m sure the S5 has more to offer but i just got my hands on them for less than a week and for the price i am paying, i think it’s very well worth it.

I’ve seen many people using the M mode in the S5, took amazing pictures comparable to an entry level dSLR namely the D40 but of course they will never be of the same. The S5 will always be a level lower than a dSLR.

If you are a person looking to begin your soul searching on dSLRs, i would recommend you to purchase the S5 as opposed to the well-known D40 as a beginners tool because the S5 combined both a digicam AND a dSLR in general. You’ll feel like you’re guiding throughout the learning process.

Have a look on the quality of pictures i’ve taken with my S5 here
    http://backalleyblog.wordpress.com/canon-s5-is/27th-august-2008/

Whether it’s the S5 of a pure dSLR, it depends really on the person. However, there’s one thing that you have to take note is about the batteries, S5 doesn’t use the coventional lithium rechargeable battery bars but 4AAs instead so investing on some really good long lasting ones are going to be another cost inducing exercise.
